Did you know that our company wasn’t always called “Emera Inc.”? The journey to how we became who we are today started back in 1885. Take a walk through our history with us:
1885: Nova Scotia Power predecessor Halifax Light Company is formed to power streetlights in Halifax. Many of Emera’s operating companies also trace their origins back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
1973: Nova Scotia Power is created through the merger of the Nova Scotia Power Commission and Nova Scotia Light & Power.
1992: Nova Scotia Power is privatized in the largest equity transaction in Canadian history at the time.
1998: Nova Scotia Power Inc. receives approval to establish a new parent company called NS Power Holdings Inc.
2000: NS Power Holdings Inc. is renamed to our current name, Emera Inc. Learn where our name came from.
2001: Emera becomes the first Canadian company to purchase an American utility. Our growth and diversification in the 2000s and 2010s includes acquiring a number of Caribbean utilities and branching out into energy services including our marketing and trading business, Emera Energy.
2016: Emera acquires and merges with TECO Energy, welcoming the teams at Tampa Electric, Peoples Gas, New Mexico Gas, and TECO Partners into our family. This $10.4B USD transaction is one of the largest instances of cross-border M&A in Canadian history, making Emera one of the 20 largest utilities in North America.
2021: We share our Climate Commitment, a set of clear carbon-reduction goals and our vision to achieve net-zero by 2050.
