FIND YOUR COMMUNITY
Feeling like you belong and being supported to show up as your authentic self is something we strive for. Take our employee resource groups (ERGs). At many Emera companies, you have the opportunity to join our ERGs to help you find a community in your workplace. Mostly run from our corporate headquarters, these groups are open to any employee who wants to participate. Their purpose is to help the business toward its goal of being an equitable, inclusive workplace and to provide employees with a sense of belonging at work.
We currently have nine ERGs, which include employee-led groups for women and gender-diverse employees—specifically focused on trades, IT, corporate, and engineering—an ERG for 2SLGBTQ+ employees, Indigenous employees, employees living with disabilities, and a Black Employee Resource Group. As we continue on our DE&I journey, we look forward to expanding these communities.
HEAR MORE FROM OUR TEAM
"I feel empowered knowing I have this community working towards the betterment of wellness, inclusivity, and celebration where our individual experiences are valued. The makeup of our teams, our hiring practices, our visual messaging, our ERGs, and even our meeting places are now developed with a DE&I focus."

"To me, diversity is not how we differ, but rather embracing each other’s uniqueness. When I first came to Canada, I was pleasantly surprised to see how friendly and inclusive everybody was, and when I started with Emera, I was further surprised by the efforts to not only have conversations about diversity and Inclusion, but also take productive action toward achieving those goals."

"My journey with the Emera group of companies holds a place of great importance in my heart. Working here has given me the confidence and comfort to be who I am today. After my citizenship ceremony, my team decorated my workstation and held a celebration on my behalf!"
Leena
HR Associate, Pensions, Emera Inc.
"Being a woman in a leadership role, and having navigated as a female engineer in a male dominated field, I have had the privilege to participate and reflect on the question—what does equity mean? Equity is about overcoming the barriers different people face in being successful. Equity does not mean equality, and that's difficult because how is it fair? I'm continuously thinking about where we are on this journey towards gender equity, where do we want to be, and how we get there."

DE&I AT EMERA: BUILDING A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE WORKPLACE FOR EVERYONE
Our leadership teams understand that they have an important role to play in creating a supportive workplace. They lead by example and demonstrate our values. Building psychologically safe teams means we can come to work as our authentic selves, and we can speak up and challenge the status quo.
We know that our teams are our biggest strength, and we seek new perspectives. To be innovative, we have to tap into great talent. One of the ways we do this is through the Atlantic Immigration Program. As a participating employer, this can be a route for you to seek your Canadian permanent residency if you are a skilled worker or international graduate from a Canadian institution.
When you fill out your application, we encourage you to complete our Self-Identification Survey. We set a high bar in our DE&I strategy, and you can help us by informing the statistics about who is applying and let us know if we are missing out on talent in specific communities. We are always looking for feedback and opportunities to remove barriers. We strive to provide a fair and equitable hiring and employee experience.
LISTENING TO & SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITIES
We're always listening to better understand how the needs of our communities are evolving and how we can support our teams in the work they do outside their professional life. After all, we want you to feel comfortable in bringing your whole self to work.
We offer volunteer hours and fundraising matching through our Good Neighbour Program. We're proud that our teams are recognized as leaders when it comes to community giving, and partner with community organizations where we live and work.
